The Dog Show with Jazz

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

Donna Chicone and her co-host Jazz The Dog Show is a local cable-access show created by Donna Chicone. This half-hour show has many guests including a vet and a trainer. For a dog owner, it’s packed with a lot of good information and it’s fun to watch.

Donna faces a unique problem, the cable access channel doesn’t give her a regular time slot and it’s hard for her to develop a fan base. My solution for her was to take each episode from her editor and upload it to blip.tv and post it on the Dog Show’s website I built for her. The site also archives her previous shows. Now I’m in the process of creating a social media network to support the website. Fans can now follow her on the Facebook fan page I created for her and find out when the next show is posted to the site.

Yes, I do all those things: manage a blip.tv channel, convert and upload raw video, build a custom website, manage the site, create social media networks and promote my client with them. Also, I’m building traffic by talking about it in this article on my blog! (Yes, the very custom blog I built for myself and can build for you.) OK, I’ll put my horn down…

So please check out this dog-lover’s show and “become a fan” of the show’s Facebook fan page to get the work out. If you know anyone with a dog, please invite them to the fan page!

Portrait of Billy Mclaughlin and Simple Gifts

SimpleGifts featuring Billy McLaughlin begins it’s Holiday Concert series.

With Celtic whistle, piano, acoustic guitar, violin and beautifully blended female voices, the group finds its strengths in the stirring arrangements that combine traditional folk music with more modern elements that both soothe and inspire. You can listen to samples and see their tour schedule at the website that I built for them.

The site is a good example of how I like to build; a clear home page, services or products pages, an extensive press page with resources for promoters and journalists and a contact page. When considering a website, this is the pattern I recommend following. It’s clear, concise and effective. Other elements of this site that I created are: the green candle background photo, all the ticket-sales coding and the clipped sound samples. I offer a wide range of options because I look at site design as fabrication – if a photo background is needed, I’ll create and shoot it. This saves the customer the hassle of resourcing elements, keeps the schedule moving and saves money.

Billy has a big December coming up, he’s hosting the Minnesota PBS pledge drive this Wednesday, Dec 1st, so be sure to tune in and see him play live!

Joe Paquet, Fine Art Landscape Painter

Soybeans and Scandinavians
Joe and I have been working together for years; I was a student of his landscape oil painting studio in St. Paul before becoming his designer. What sets Joe apart as a mentor is his merciless dedication to your growth. He always knows what you need to work on at the moment, knows how to explain it for you and show you if necessary. Painters flock to watch him give a demonstration. Honestly, I learned more from him in a couple days than I did from years in art school.

The website I created for Joe joepaquet.com accomplished several objectives: a showcase of his work, a listing of upcoming classes with info for the students and links to the galleries that represent him. My design is clean, clear, Google-friendly and supports the work. In other words, my goal is for you to notice the paintings, not the design. Since building Joe’s site, I’ve been building quite a few sites for artists, you can see more of them here.

Joe’s passionate, knowledgeable style has helped me as a designer as well; he asked me a few years ago to photograph his work. Photographing oil paintings is very tricky, they glare like crazy have subtle color and fine brushwork. With Joe’s patience and insight, I came up with the right mix of equipment and technique.
If you are an artist, consider having me photograph your artwork for you.
